The American English Language Program (AELP) at Northern Kentucky University offers English language classes to students from around the world who wish to improve their grammar, writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Graduates of our six-level English program typically go on to study in one of the many undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered at NKU. Enrollment in our program also helps students gain valuable English language skills to perform well on the TOEFL and IELTS tests, improve their careers or job possibilities, and develop confidence to live, study, and work in an English language environment.
Our diverse group of students – who come from Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe – enjoy many opportunities to interact with American and international students. Dynamic and engaging classes from experienced ESL instructors 25 hours per week help to make learning English efficient and enjoyable. The educational experience continues outside of class in casual conversations with the friendly students and campus community at NKU during class breaks, at lunchtime, and after classes. There are also many opportunities to meet and talk with Americans in daily life at the residence halls, through student organizations and campus activities, or during events throughout the year in Highland Heights and the Cincinnati area.
Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), NKU’s American English Language Program is an administrative unit of the International Education Center, which also embodies the Office of International Students & Scholar and the Education Abroad Office.
